Lone has survived his ordeal at Innsmouth, and we begin the game with a few short scenes depicting his return to the nearby Massachusetts town of Arkham. This time around, Lone Carter, private investigator and one of first game’s two protagonists, takes over top billing, with the exception of a few scenes that let you control other characters while the tale delves into visions of faraway lands or dimensions. Though the production values are noticeably higher in Mountains of Madness, it comes in just a hair behind its predecessor in terms of all-around package, due to some frustrating puzzle design, a less satisfying narrative and an ending that feels like either time or the budget ran out, causing it to be drastically truncated. Though the story concluded satisfactorily enough, the team got right to work on a more serious follow-up, plumbing the famed horror author’s body of work for further source material from which to take inspiration. ![]() Lovecraft, set in an early twentieth-century New England perpetually shrouded under a blanket of darkness that seemed to conceal eldritch creatures always just out of sight, always just past the edge of the monitor, with a healthy dose of humor to boot. To summarise my thoughts of The Innsmouth Case, it is a decent all round experience probably great to play when travelling or on your hols, it’s probably not a game I’ll keep going back to but a title worth having in your collection all the same.PsychoDev’s 2017 Chronicle of Innsmouth was an enjoyable, well-crafted jaunt through the eerie imagination of H.P. The game has a relaxing yet creepy instrumental soundtrack to it playing throughout which is actually quite pleasant, it would’ve been nice to have a bit of voice acting when reading through pages but to be fair it is kind of cool to use your imagination. I really like the graphic style of Innsmouth Case with its cartoon styling and some movement it flows smoothly throughout the game. I found the game enjoyable but certainly creepy at the same time with some little chuckle moments thrown in for good measure. Innsmouth Case is the first of its kind blending horror and comedy and mixing it with the text based choose your own adventure format and overall it works well and allows you to tell your own story. You get to meet many quirky characters from the lovely Innsmouth along the way interviewing them to seek the answers you need or think you need to solve the case and find Tabitha,whether they will give you the right answers or lead you down the wrong path is down to you to judge. Now depending what path you choose to take via your choices will depend more on the game you play, different choices create different actions and determine if you solve the case or not, although there are over 20 different ways to solve the case. The game has that 1920s detective TV show vibe about it, a mysterious woman walks into a dingy detective office, for me this is a great way to start off the story and gameplay. The Innsmouth Case is basically a choose your own adventure game letting you make the choices which in turn effects how the game plays out. When I was a child I used to love the choose you own adventure books, reading them over and over making the different choices to give you different endings, there was something thrilling about having the power to change the story. A game in which every decision counts, and there is far more than one way to successfully solve the case … or fail miserably!” Gameplay The unique mixture of horror and humor makes The Innsmouth Case the first scary-comedy-text-adventure of its kind.
